Wear It Wednesday: Chic Shimmer

Shimmer, sheer, glitzy and glam are adjectives reserved for or more commonly associated with an evening ensemble. But when elements of the aforementioned nature are tastefully incorporated into an everyday outfit the result is nothing short of chic and polished. So where is the balance? The outfit below is a perfect example!

I paired a gold sheer sweater with black pants, asserting at a basic level (top + pants) that my top will dictate the rest of the look. I accessorized with a gold chain link bracelet, a neutral tone handbag and of course, put a little sparkle in my step with multi-colored confetti flats. Extremely simple to assemble, the glitz is not overdone yet evidently present elevating the entire look to a chic level.

The Heart of the Matter

During his earthly ministry, Jesus often times used parables to convey a message. By definition a parable is a simple story used to illustrate a moral or spiritual lesson.

The beauty of Biblical parables is that while they are saturated with examples and scenarios that people in Biblical times could relate to, the messages they contain are universal making them relevant even today!

Each parable has a purpose—but there is one in particular that challenged me this week. And that is The Parable of the Sower.

In a nutshell, The Parable of the Sower (Luke 8:1-15) is a story about a farmer who went out to sow his seed and as he was scattering the seed, some fell…

      1.     On the path and it was trampled on producing no plants
      2.     On rocks and the when the plants grew they withered because there was no moisture
      3.     Among thorns and when the plants grew they were chocked by thorns
      4.     On good soil and when the plants grew they yielded crops

The seed in the parable is the word of God. Some people are…

      1.     Along the path: they hear the word but the devil comes and snatches it from their hearts
      2.     On the rocks: they receive the word with joy but have no root to grow
      3.     Among thorns: they hear the word but go on their way getting choked by life’s worries, riches and pleasures
      4.     On good soil: they hear the word, retain it and by persevering produce a crop

To read entire parable, click here.

I’ve read this parable many times before and thought, ok I get it people are going to react differently to God’s word—but that is only scratching the surface. I rediscovered some sermon notes tucked away in the pages of my Bible that examined this passage and posed the questions, why? Why do people react differently to the word of God? Jesus was not preaching different things in different places—his message of the gospel was consistent, so how come it has different effects?

I glanced further down the note-filled page and uncovered the answer. The type of soil in the parable is representative of the condition of one’s heart. Reactions to the gospel have everything to do with the heart of the one receiving the message.

With this insight I went from understanding the parable to examining what category my heart falls into. And in doing so, I couldn’t help but smile when it dawned on me— throughout scripture we see God’s main concern is your heart. Your heart is the heart of the matter.

Deuteronomy 6:5 “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.”

1 Samuel 16:7 “The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

2 Chronicles 16:9 “For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the wart to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him.”

Psalm 19:14 “May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.”

Proverbs 3:5 “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.”

Matthew 5:8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.”

Luke 16:15 “[Jesus] said to [the Pharisees], ‘You are the ones who justify yourselves in the eyes of men, but God knows your hearts. What is highly valued among men is detestable in God’s sight.’”

What is the condition of your heart? I encourage you to make some time this week to examine yourself and reflect upon that. Let's strive to continue building character by giving our hearts to Jesus.

Winter Romance: Katie & Reese Shull

Meet the Bride
Name: Katie Campbell
The Future: Mrs. Shull
Age: 23
Dated Her Man: 3 years
Engaged: 9 months
Ring Cut: Round Solitaire

Katie is a young woman who’s infectious smile and genuine spirit shines a warm ray of light in the lives of many. She is passionate about Jesus, family, friends and kids all over the world—in fact, Katie says her mission in life is to reaffirm every child’s value and uniqueness! Described as enthusiastic and empathetic (with a little bit of sass) Katie is the fun, best friend you can always count on. When Katie isn’t pouring her love in her work as Director of Children & Young Families at Malibu Presbyterian Church, you will find her singing, watching movies, entertaining friends or spending time with her sisters, niece and nephew. Aside from graduating from Pepperdine University and maintaining amazing friendships, Katie considers meeting the man of her dreams one of the most significant experiences in her life.

When asked, she answered:

What is the best part about planning the wedding?
The best part of wedding planning was working with our vendors. Most of our vendors were personal friends of ours, which made for really fun meetings! Our photographer was one of my best friends, our DJ was a family friend, my makeup artist was a sweet friend, and our officiator was my brother in law. Everything was really personal and meaningful.

What is the worst part about planning the wedding?
The worst part of wedding planning was keeping our guest list small. We wanted to include everyone but we also dreamed of a personal, intimate wedding. Reese and I are both people pleasers so we were worried about hurting people’s feelings. Everyone was very understanding and we don’t regret it at all, because all of our guests had played huge roles in our lives.

What is something you’d do different?
To me, our day was perfect. I would’ve tried to maybe breathe a little easier during the planning process! The day went so smoothly—there was no need for stress!

Advice for Brides-to-Be?
It is easy to get wrapped up in planning your one special day, but in reality, the end result is so much better than your actual wedding! We put so much emphasis on the wedding, but the wedding is ONE day, your husband is forever. It’s easy to get into all of the hype of being engaged, sometimes you even feel like a celebrity—but married life is better than anything I’ve ever experienced.

What celebrity would you invite to your wedding and why?
Brangelina and their 6 kids for sure. The more kids, the merrier!

The Celebration

Katie had always dreamed of having a winter wedding. “Something about winter always made me giddy,” she said. The lights, family getting together, fireplaces—what is better than that? Instead of planning a Christmas theme wedding with red, green and snowflakes—the couple created their own atmosphere that captured an authentic winter romance.

The Rincon Beach Club in Carpinteria transformed the couple’s visualization of a relaxed, youthful and intimate wedding into a reality. The ceremony took place in an outdoor garden adorned with twinkling lights. “People told me I was crazy for having an outdoor wedding in December,” says Katie, “but when the day arrived it was a perfect 75 degrees with a light sea breeze.”

The gentle sound of crashing waves throughout the ceremony contributed to the tranquil atmosphere as Katie’s bridesmaids walked down the aisle in varying styles of soft gray dresses, holding white peonies and hydrangeas wrapped with turquoise twine. Preceded also by a ring bearer and flower girl holding a chalkboard sign that read “Here Comes Forever”, Katie emerged as an elegant winter princess in a full lace modified A-line/mermaid gown. A love that began as a friendship now carried Katie to the altar where she was united with her best friend. Underneath a glistening chandelier Katie and Reese pledged their lives to one another—making Mr. & Mrs. Shull their official title.

The romantic ambiance continued into the reception. While the newlyweds slipped away for sunset photos on the beach, their guests enjoyed refreshments and good company around indoor/outdoor fireplaces. Personal elements, such as hand painted ornaments by the couple, gently hung on lighted tree branches doubling up as original décor and party favors. When Katie and Reese reunited with their guests, they shared their first dance as Mr. & Mrs. to Sunday Morning by Maroon 5. The rest of the evening was sheer magic as the couple spent their first moments as husband and wife surrounded by loved ones. In true fairytale fashion, the newlyweds were showered with sequins and rhinestones during the send off; and at the end of the day, when all was said and done—only one sentiment lingered in the atmosphere, dreamy.

Wear It Wednesday: Simple Class

Today I opted for a simple “piece-together” outfit that although easy to assemble does not lack class. One of my favorite fall styles to strut on the street is jeggings with high heels. There is just something so comfortably stylish about pairing warm jeggings with a sophisticated shoe. How you piece together an outfit sets the tone for how you feel and how you will be perceived.

For the base of my outfit, I created a blank canvas by pairing a black tee with black STS Blue Jeggings (one of my favorite brands) and black pumps. Because I always like to incorporate a sophisticated element to my outfits, I chose to add color and dimension with a textured open cardigan. Not only does the texture of the cardigan compliment the sleek black canvas, but the color and prints come alive resulting in a noticeable statement. Elegantly place a delicate crossbody bag on your shoulder that conforms to the minimal, polished look and voila—you’re a walking fashionista who will simply turn heads with an effortless classy look.

Bonus: The open cardigan I’m wearing from Neiman Marcus is reversible! The photos below show the comparison between a color and print statement.
