Wear It Wednesday: Watch For Men

I was recently introduced to Invaluable.com—the world’s premiere online marketplace featuring jewelry, fine arts, antiques, collectibles, and even entire estate sales—and was challenged to style a men’s outfit around a watch!

I gladly accepted and began scouring Invaluable.com for my central piece. I chose to feature the TISSOT Herrenuhr Le Locle Automatic watch because of its classic simplicity. When paired with the right outfit, a watch like this turns your look from chic to sharp. (It’s all about the details!)

Invaluable.com

Below are two examples of how the TISSOT can be worn. The first, a casual ensemble keeping it low key yet polished and the second, a dressy assortment perfect for the office, an evening event or a formal date.

Ladies: This outfit guide is perfect for gift ideas for the men in your life—whether it be a romantic interest, relative or friend—sometimes they need a little help piecing things together, so be the magically fairy that makes their look complete.

Gentlemen: Don’t underestimate the power of detail—ladies notice! A watch is one accessory that showcases your style and displays a put-together look.

Let Your Silhouette Shine: How Humanitarian And Founder/CEO of TO THE MARKET | Survivor-made Goods, Jane Mosbacher Morris, Is Empowering Women Around The World

Simple Silhouette is a space created to encourage women to seek beauty beyond what is skin deep and to better understand the fullness of their individual worth. Each person is purposefully created—gifted with tailored talents, particular passions and the ability to impact the lives of others. We all have a story to tell, we all have a scope in life and we all have a one of a kind silhouette. I’m thrilled to introduce a new writing category entitled Let Your Silhouette Shine which will highlight exemplary women who, by pursuing their passion, discovered their silhouette and inspire others to follow suit.

Name: Jane Mosbacher Morris
Title: Founder and CEO of TO THE MARKET | Survivor-made Goods
Education: B.S. in Foreign Service from Georgetown University and a MBA from Columbia Business School
Jane’s Silhouette: Humanitarian

Jane is an outstanding young woman whose heart for improving the lives of others has made waves across the globe.

She served as the Director of Humanitarian Action for the McCain Institute for International Leadership, at which she managed the Institute’s anti-human trafficking program and currently serves on the Institute’s Human Trafficking Advisory Council. Prior to joining the Institute, she worked in the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Counterterrorism and in the Secretary’s Office of Global Women’s Issues. But Jane’s impressive resume doesn’t end there—she also worked at the Millennium Challenge Corporation, the Center for Strategic and International Studies, and has served as an investment consultant to Barbara Corcoran of ABC’s Shark Tank.

Additionally, Jane has traveled, spoke and written broadly on peace and security, regularly blogs for the Huffington Post, has received numerous professional accolades—such as being named one of the “Top 99 Under 33 Most Influential Young Professional” by The Diplomatic Courier in 2011, holds a seat on numerous Advisory Boards and is a proud mentor at the University of Kentucky’s Gatton School of Business’s Women Business Leaders.

Jane’s passion to serve others coupled with well-rounded experience led to her most recent endeavor, the launch of TO THE MARKET | Survivor-made Goods (TTM), a social enterprise focused on the promotion of goods made by and stories told by survivors of conflict, abuse and disease.

I recently had the privilege of speaking with Jane and discovered that her story is greatly powered by allowing her silhouette to shine which in turn has not only impacted the lives of many, but has also brought her great joy and fulfillment over the years. Here is a snippet of our delightful conversation.

What inspired you to pursue humanitarian work?
“My faith. I’ve been blessed with many special opportunities—being born in the United States, being financially stable, being healthy, having access to a wonderful education—gifts I feel compelled to use to improve the lives of others. I believe it’s what I’m called to do and I love it! In addition, my experiences in the field have helped me to better understand what I wanted to pursue. Prayer has kept me grounded and directed my path, aiding in my discernment.”

Why launch TTM, what is your connection the causes you advocate?
“During my time at the State Department tackling the issue of women and security, I was heartbroken by how mistreated and oppressed so many women are in communities around the world. I value control and independence—therefore, to envision being in an environment where I have no control over my life is difficult. In my opinion, people aren’t given the opportunity to fully become who they were made to be in overly-controlled environments. I began studying existing efforts to empower these communities and identified some gaps, specifically around economic empowerment. I have a desire to help those most vulnerable live a protected, safe and love-filled life and for each person to know that they are valued and have intrinsic worth.”

What are some of the most rewarding aspects of your career?
“The opportunity to expand friendships, work alongside likeminded people who share the same passions, be part of a team and (even more importantly) be part of an effort.”

What advice do you have for young professionals who share the same social passions as you and want to make a positive difference in the world?
“Learn to walk before you run. I wouldn’t be as effective if I had tried to start TO THE MARKET straight out of college. Working under people and being exposed to different institutions has been valuable. I personally believe it’s really worthwhile to learn from others before you start your own organization because you will serve your end consumer that much more effectively if you’ve been exposed to more of what works and what doesn’t. Creating a non-profit or a business IS NOT about you (the founder)—it’s about serving your end-customer, whether that customer is paying or not. Hone skill sets that will improve your effectiveness—passion is important but it’s not a substitute for well thought out action.”

Jane’s bold pursuit of her love for humanitarian work has paved a successful path to leadership and has enriched her life’s journey. How will you use your passions to bring about positive change in your family, in your friend group, in your community, in this world? What story is your life telling? What is YOUR silhouette?

Sweet Romance: Heidi & Colin Campbell

Meet the Bride
Name: Heidi Brenan
The Future: Mrs. Campbell
Age: 23
Dated Her Man: 8 years
Engaged: 10 months
Ring Cut: Round

Heidi is a young beauty whose outgoing, fun and caring personality doesn’t go unnoticed. Born and raised in West Lafayette, Indiana, Heidi bravely ventured out to the west coast to earn her undergraduate degree from Pepperdine University in Malibu, California. Going to a school far away from friends and family was a challenge, but Heidi considers maintaining the friendships from back home one of her greatest accomplishments. Her compassionate spirit and genuine love for others is reflected in her passions which include spending time with family and friends in addition to nurturing her personal relationship with God. Heidi currently resides in Cleveland, Ohio where she is attending Physical Therapy School and is loving life with husband, Colin.

When asked, she answered:

What is the best part about planning the wedding?
Planning the ceremony—especially planning the songs and writing our vows together. Colin wanted to give input on that so I was happy he was excited about it.

What is the worst part about planning the wedding?
For me it was being in Physical Therapy school, having busy schedules and moving things to our new house! We didn’t plan down time with each other. Having a to-do list was always on my mind and towards the end it was very stressful.

What is something you’d do different?
Spend more time with Colin—be intentional about making time for us instead of constantly talking about the wedding during the planning process. Also, I’d have loved to talk with and say thank you to all of our guests at the wedding.

Advice for Brides-to-Be?
The night goes by so fast—try to enjoy it! We were on the fence about a videographer and are extremely happy we decided to hire one because now we can watch the footage and relive the happiest day of our lives.

What celebrity would you invite to your wedding and why?
Drew Brees because he is a childhood hero of ours as a quarterback of Purdue university, does a lot of work in the community and is a great role model:)

The Celebration
Heidi and Colin are high school sweethearts. Colin first noticed Heidi when she became part of the same Bible study group his mom joined—having seen her at a few meetings that were hosted at his home, he mustered up the courage to ask her out. From that moment on, the two embarked on a journey that eventually led to the altar.

Ten months after a romantic lakeside sunset proposal in Ohio, Heidi and Colin tied the knot on August 9, 2014, at Laurel Hall in Indianapolis, Indiana. The celebration hosted 200 guests with an outdoor ceremony and indoor reception. The outdoor ceremony was like a page out of a fairytale book. A vibrant green blanket of grass and dense population of lively trees set the stage for this magical day. Eight bridesmaids emerged onto the scene in delicate blush floor-length dresses, which nicely complimented the fullness of the green landscape and sharp grey groomsmen suits. Moments later, Heidi appeared in a dainty A-line gown with sweetheart neckline, lace detail and fingertip veil. United with her prince at the altar, Heidi and Colin pledged their life to one another, declared their love and officially became Mr. and Mrs. Campbell.

The celebration continued with an indoor reception but maintained the romantic atmosphere of the ceremony. The tables were elegantly dressed in white and decorated with exquisite blush, ivory and mint green flower arrangements. Furthermore, the strong woodwork and antique chandeliers inside Laurel Hall added a dose of refinement to the already tasteful environment.

Following a post ceremony photo session, Heidi and Colin joined the party among their guests. They shared their first dance as a married couple to the song Only One and Only You by Steven Curtis Chapman and savored every moment they had being surrounded by loved ones. The celebration ended with the release of Chinese lanterns in the sky and a sparkler send-off, the perfect way to close one chapter and start the next—deeply in love, with sparks flying.

3 Truths About Comparison Everyone Needs To Know

Rachel Ruth
I woke up to the sound of gentle rain this morning gracefully showering the earth and rhythmically brushing past my window. In a moment of complete peace and contentment at the start of my day—I couldn’t help but think to myself, I wish I could sit with YOU in a bay window all day with a cup of tea and admire the rain while we chat about life; learn your story, listen to your heart and offer meaningful insight in return.

I unfortunately do not have the luxury of doing so nor is it feasible to personally meet each one of you in a single day, but the power of the internet can bridge the gap between us with a single email! Visit the Let’s Talk page to connect with me any day. Thankfully I also have this blog space to communicate with you and I’m determined to do what I can to build you up!

If we were chatting in the comfort of a bay window, I imagine we would discover common ground—whether it be a similar past experience or present circumstance. Whatever the commonalities may be, I guarantee one struggle would be relatable across the board—comparison.

It’s difficult for anyone to abstain from comparing themselves to others, let along girls! (Am I right?!) I know this because I’m speaking from experience. I can remember comparing myself to others as early on as 1st grade! It starts with clothes, academics, boys (why does he have a crush on her over me?) then into junior high and high school it’s about body image, popularity and more boys; then you think it’ll all be better in college but the cycle continues and you compare majors, life ambitions, accolades and boys become candidates for your “Husband Hunt”, you have it all planned out until you finish college and now you tackle the comparisons of life—where do you work, what are you doing, what master degree do you have, why aren’t you married or have kids like your peers already do; after you are married you compare your role as wife to other wifeys, when you’re a mother you compare yourself to other mothers, your kids to other kids, perhaps even the state of your marriage and trajectory of your career! The point is it never ends and at the end of the day we are left feeling defeated and discouraged.

Most of us are familiar with the phrase “Comparison is the thief of joy” and while I believe that to be true, I also believe comparison is harmful because it’s what we use to measure our worth.

My dear friends, that falsehood could not be further from the truth! Our worth is not found in nor should be measured by our comparison to others. Here are three reasons why…

1. Our Focus Should Be to Please God
Galatians 1:10 “For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.”

2. We Are Each Created to Fulfill A Uniquely Designed Purpose
Ephesians 2:10 “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

3. Comparison to Others Bears No Fruit
2 Corinthians 10:12 “We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves. When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise.”

I’d like to make one last remark to sum things up—finding your worth in comparing yourself to others is a faulty unit of measure because your silhouette is one of a kind. Your silhouettes, my lovelies, are incomparable.

This song perfectly speaks to how precious you are being the Only One and Only You. I hope it encourages you as it did me.

Wear It Wednesday: Back In Business

Happy 2015! It’s a new year and that means: new posts, new partnerships, new business ventures—same goals, to encourage women to have upstanding character, to embrace your inner & outer beauty and (of course) to always be fashionable wherever the road leads.

Today’s look was inspired by upcoming new opportunities and the excitement that accompanies the work ahead. Nothing says business professional quite like a pencil skirt. Naturally form fitted, pencil skirts are designed to flatter a woman’s body. For a completely slender look, you can pair a pencil skirt with a fitted top—but I opted for a blouse to add a little playfulness to the outfit and balance the sleek nature of the fitted skirt. Because the colors that make up the body of the outfit lean towards neutral tones—you can add a pop of color with a coat. I chose to tie the outfit together with a navy pea coat and maintain a chic professional front.

Lastly, not only is it important to be presentable but also be dependable! Women with a good work ethic stay motivated, achieve goals and earn character points. Cheers to the beginning of a wonderful year ahead!
